ANTIOCH, Tenn. (BNC) — A shooter killed one person and injured five others, as well as himself, at the meeting of the Burnette Chapel congregation Sunday, Sept. 24. Police began to receive reports around 11:15 am.

The injured were to be transported to Vanderbilt Medical Center and other regional hospitals.

The shooter was 25-year-old Emanuel Kidega Samson, a Sudanese immigrant, who had attended the congregation some in the past, according to reports. Christians in the Nashville area have worked with Sudanese immigrants, and some have been converted.

All except one of the injured were over 60 years of age.

The shooter was one of the wounded. His wound was self-inflicted.

Minister Joey Spann and his wife Peggy were among the injured. He was shot in the shoulder.

The shooter first shot a woman in the parking lot, then entered the building and started shooting.

Caleb Engle was serving as usher and rushed the shooter. He was pistol-whipped, but was able to make it to his car to get his legally licensed gun. He then held the shooter at gun-point until police arrived.

Antioch lies in the greater Nashville metro area.

Samson has resided in the US for some 20 years. Some reports say he was known to the congregation.

No motive for the shooting has yet come to light.
