Lessons Added in New Topical Lessons

TGOC speaker James GravelleTwo new lessons by James Gravelle in a revised Topical Series were added to the TGOC website. The newsletter briefly described the lessons as follows.

As James begins part one of his two-part series on “The Distinctive Nature of the Church,” he asks viewers to imagine that they had a friend who was present on the day of Pentecost described in Acts 2 when the Lord’s church began, and who became a member of the church on that occasion. James then sets forth the following scenario.

“Suppose you asked your friend the following question: ‘To what church did the Lord add you?’ Would your friend say that he had been added to the Baptist Church, the Methodist Church, the Catholic Church or perhaps the Pentecostal Church? Of course not. It could not have been any of those, since they did not come into existence until between 600 and 1,600 years later. So to what church were the people added on the day of Pentecost? If we can answer that question, then we will have a basis for finding the same church today.”

Using that question, “To what church were the people added on the day of Pentecost?”, James launches an extensive investigation into the biblical characteristics that can be found only in the true church, for the church will have the right: (a) Builder (Mt. 16:18); (b) Foundation (Ps. 118:22; 1 Cor. 3:11); (b) place of origin (Is. 2:2-3; Lk. 24:49; Acts 2); (d) name (Is. 62:2; Rom. 16:16); and (e) organization (Tit. 1:5; 1 Tim. 3:1-7 and Tit. 1:6-9).

As James begins part two on “The Distinctive Nature of the Church,” he notes that the true church will have the right: (f) creed, the Bible (2 Pet. 1:3; 2 Tim. 3:16-17); (g) undenominational nature (Eph. 1:22-23; 4:4; Col. 1:18); (h) admission requirements (Rom. 10:17; Jn. 3:16; Lk. 13:3; Rom. 10:10; Acts 2:38); and (i) worship (prayer, singing, giving, partaking of the Lord’s Supper and preaching/teaching). He closes his series quoting Matthew 25:31-34.

James then observes, “I don’t know about you, but I certainly want to be included among that group of people who goes to heaven.”

Both of these lessons are available on the TGOC site in video, audio and transcript.

TGOC is a ministry overseen by the McLish Avenue church in Ardmore, Okla., and is supported by congregations and individual saints nationwide. The work is now in its second decade of operation.
