PLEASANTON, TX. (BNc) — Jerry Wood Hill, long-time missionary, was born in Sabinal on Oct. 2, 1928 to Thomas Comer and Veva Lenore Hill. He passed away in South Texas Regional Medical Center on Sept. 12, 2011. He is survived by his wife Ann Roberts Hill, 3 children: Barbara (Ollie) Kirk, Linda (Mark) Barriger, and David (Becky) Hill, six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, T. C. and Floyd Hill, and one grandchild, Zachary Barriger.
Jerry moved to Pleasanton when he was a boy, where he graduated from Pleasanton High School. He served in the Air Force from 1946 to 1949 and graduated from Abilene Christian University in 1952. In 2002, ACU recognized Jerry and Ann with a plaque commemorating their 43 years of service as evangelists and missionaries in Latin America.
He began his journey in mission work, teaching and preaching in English and Spanish at Benavides. In 1959 Jerry and his family moved to Guatemala. They did mission work in Guatemala, Mexico, Bolivia and Argentina for over twenty years. Jerry recently published his mission experiences in a book titled “Guatemala: Joy and Crown”.
Jerry was a very dedicated and gentle man. He will be missed by many, many friends throughout the world. In lieu of flowers, Jerry’s wish was for memorial donations to the Medina Children’s Home, Medina, TX.
Visitation was held at Hurley Funeral Home in Pleasanton, on Wednesday, Sept. 14 and today, Thursday, Sept. 15 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The funeral service will be held at the Pleasanton Church of Christ, 1003 North Main Street, Pleasanton on Thursday, Sept. 15, 2011 at 2 p.m. Interment will be held at Seaside Memorial Park, Corpus Christi on Friday, Sept. 16, 2011 at 11 a.m. Anyone wishing to leave condolences for the family may do so at the Hurley Funeral Home website.
