Race relations then and now: Hugh Fulford recalls 1968 merger

GALLATIN, Tenn. (BNC) — Preacher Hugh Fulford recalled today the merger of two congregations in Clarksville, Tenn., one black, the other white, in 1968. He worked with the latter congregation. No news was published about the merger at the time of its occurrence. But it serves to dispel the accusation of widespread racism among Christians.

Kentucky churches to merge

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (BNc) — Elders at the Watterson Trail congregation announced an official merger date with the Middletown church. In their bulletin for the week of May 15, they wrote:

As many of you know there have been discussions over the past few years regarding the possible merger of the Middletown Church of Christ and Watterson Trail Church of Christ. Both parties have established the necessary understanding to move forward with this merger. It is anticipated that all of the necessary paperwork will be completed to make May 15th the official date of this merger. We ask that we all continue to pray for this event and that the merger between our two families become one in fellowship and spirit striving to continue to build the family of God in Louisville. Making a bigger impact in Canton

An update on the Northwest church, by Earl Ash

CANTON, Oh. (BNc) — An article appeared June 10 about the merger of the two largest congregations in Canton, Oh.

We have received numerous requests on how the merger has gone and the current status of the work in Canton.

What began as conversation many years ago, culminated in a meeting of the elders this past spring. After much discussion and prayer, it was decided that the Lord’s work could best be carried out by the uniting of these two fine congregations and so the process began.
