Bible Club Joao Pessoa

JOAO PESSOA, Brazil (BNc)- One of our co-workers in the church in Joao Pessoa, Raniere Menezes, started an English major in the Federal University and 80% of his classes are in English. He had the idea of finding an empty room at lunch time on Fridays and starting a Bible class in English for his classmates.

So we started with an introductory class, during which we asked how many had ever read the Bible before. Out of eight students only two said yes. Read more

Preachers Create Powerful Illustration for Outreach

March 14, 2008

by Terry W. Frizzell

STUART, Fla. (BNc)- Recently, while listening to a report from a missionary who serves the Lord in Africa, I was somewhat discouraged to learn that the growth of the church in some areas of Africa had slowed dramatically.

What surprised me was not that some churches in Africa had slowed in their growth, but rather the common link that seemed to exist in most of those congregations.

That link, according to this missionary, was that they had hired preachers at those congregations, and the congregation had started depending upon the preacher for outreach and forgotten that outreach is a Christian thing, not a preacher thing.

He was certainly not opposed to having a hired preacher, nor am I, but it makes me wonder if sometimes the preacher becomes a crutch for the congregation.

This made me consider the congregation where I am privileged to serve the Lord, and wonder what simple ideas could be used to help motivate the congregation here to get involved in outreach efforts again rather than depending upon me.

The following is the description of a basic motivational program put together by myself and James Mayo, the preacher for the Jupiter-Tequesta church of Christ in Tequesta, Fla. Read more

Turning Pisco Upside Down

March 10, 2008

by Tim Hall

Pisco Peru saintsPISCO, Peru (BNc)- A major earthquake struck portions of southern Peru on August 15, 2007. One of the hardest hit areas was the village of Pisco.

Most houses in that town were lost, and people’s lives were literally turned upside down.

Faculty and students from the Inter-American Biblical Institute worked quickly to take water, food and other relief supplies to Pisco. This school, located in Lima, has not been long in existence, but is already making a difference in the region. These Christians came to a town that had no congregation of Christ. Their plan was to bring spiritual relief, in addition to the physical necessities. Read more

Prison Outbreak … in Reverse!

February 27, 2008

by Ruth Orr

CEDAR PARK, Tex. (BNc)- In 2006 we were set to go into the Anambra State prison where we had 64 prisoners who had studied World Bible School lessons and were ready for baptism. We had long awaited this day.

About then, there was an upheaval in Magdugari, Northern Nigeria. It seems that a school teacher had told a girl to put her Koran up. When she refused, the teacher took the book from her saying she could have it back after school. The teacher gave the book back to her, but that night rioting broke out. Read more

Thoughts on Work from a Worker

November 22, 2007

by Neal Pollard

David BayiI met David Bayi on my first trip to Tanzania in 2003. He is, on the surface, a reserved man, but he has a winning smile and jovial personality to go along with a tenacity in teaching the gospel few can match.

His former profession was competitive road racing, in which he did quite well. The discipline and determination that characterized his life and work before becoming a Christian describes his labors as a gospel preacher now. Read more
