Former Missionary dies at 76

ONTARIO, Canada (BNc) – David William Hallett was called to his eternal home on Friday, Dec. 16, 2011. He was 76.

His final weeks were lived at Hospice Niagara where he was tenderly cared for. He lived a good and eventful life. David was born in St. Catharines, Ontario to William G. and Gladys Ralph Hallett on Oct. 11, 1935. His parents and oldest brother, Edward, are deceased. Surviving are brothers Fred (Dianne), Bruce (late wife Nancy), Dennis (Sandra) and William and his sister Joyce Andy Bernais).

David attended Memorial and Central Public Schools. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy at 19 and trained as a cook. On shore leave, he spent much time with the Church of Christ in Halifax. After the Navy he trained as a nursing orderly. When an opportunity came to accompany a team of teachers and preachers into the restricted tribal areas of northeastern India, David said, “Yes.” During the next 30 years, 1963- 1993, because he was needed, he “wore many hats”: missionary, teacher, minister, counselor, protector, nurse, cook, all-around “uncle”. Digital version of Freed-Hardeman Lectureship available

HENDERSON, TN (BNc) – E-text versions of the 76th Annual Bible Lectureship of Freed-Hardeman University are now available, according to Tom L. Childers.

The 76th lectureship will be held Feb. 5-10, 2012. The 2012 lectureship book of 490 pages written by nearly 100 writers deals mainly with General Epistles: James to Jude. Read more

Grand Blanc mourns loss of longtime member

GRAND BLANC, Mich., (BNc) - Members of the Grand Blanc church mourn the passing of one of its longtime members on Dec. 2.

Wilma Kilgore, 83, died at the Pines of Burton in Burton, Mich. Her funeral was conducted on Dec. 5 at Brown Funeral Home in Grand Blanc.

In the funeral sermon, Sister Kilgore’s life was compared to Paul’s words to Timothy as an example “in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity” (1 Timothy 4:12ESV).

Sister Kilgore was born on Mar. 21, 1928 in Flint, Mich. She retired from General Motors in 1984 after 30 years of service. Survivors include two sons, Gary D. and Frederick Stan Kilgore; six grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Stancil, in 1976.

Bernice “Bonnie” Mable Cronk (1923-2011)

MOUNT JULIET, Tenn. (BNc) — “She was a very beautiful woman with a winning smile.” So someone said recently, summing up the first impression one would have upon meeting Bonnie Cronk.

Many of us grew to love her and her late husband, Jack Sr., in the winter of their lives. Even then she was a lovely lady inside and out. The deeper impression Bonnie would leave was her inner beauty. Read more

Boots on the ground

Laura and I took our brood to Pakistan in September 1967. I say brood, because we had two foster children at the time besides the three boys. We also brought a little girl home with us, Ruth. She was 19 months when we got her and on Dec. 1st this year she turned 44. Laura turned 72 last July, and I turned 76 in November.

The work in India began in Feb., 1986. As I have written often, the work is obeying Two Timothy Two Two, that is, training preachers to proclaim the unsearchable riches of Christ, which means to preach the whole counsel of God; but the bottom line is to plant strong local churches of Christ that will perpetuate the spread of the gospel even after we are dead. Did you hear about the guy who attacked a woman at the Thanksgiving Day dinner table? She was sitting in the chair he wanted, so he attacked her with a foot-long butcher knife.

Did you hear about the 20 customers hurt in Los Angeles on Black Friday? A woman pepper sprayed fellow shoppers in order to get a discounted video game player.

Did you hear about the man in California who was shot when two armed men tried to steal the things he and his family had purchased? He is in critical condition, but, thankfully, expected to survive the incident. Read more

Small Kansas church reverses losses

ANDOVER, Kan. (BNc) — A small congregation turns things around, with door-knocking and clothing give-aways, and five baptisms.

Not long ago the Andover church had over 100 saints, many of them children. As with many American congregations, they have been hit with the age factor. A few move away and some pass away, but what Andover has in 2011 is a core group who is hopeful of the future in the Flint Hills of Kansas. Read more
