Preacher Jerry Jenkins has gone to be with the Lord

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (BNc) – Jerry Jenkins, preacher with the Roebuck Parkway congregation for 44 years, died around 10:45 p.m., Monday, after a massive stroke and massive organ failure, according to his son Jeff.
He had been in the University of Alabama hospital in Birmingham.

GBN approaches fifth anniversary on the air

GENEVA, Alabama (BNc) — Gospel Broadcasting Network, a satellite television
network of the churches of Christ will be celebrating their fifth anniversary on the air in November. GBN first aired at midnight, Thanksgiving, 2005.
GBN is striving to do what the Lord commanded in the Great Commission. They are streaming live 24 hours a day on the Internet. They have coverage via direct to home satellites and have been added to a growing number of cable networks around the country as a regular channel. Good News Today, one of the most recognizable programs on GBN, also airs in several commercial markets. Read more
Another brotherhood stalwart goes on to recieve his reward

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. (BNc) – The funeral of Milton Webster, elder at the Jacksonville congregation in Jacksonville, Ala., will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 20 at 11:00 at the church building. Visitation will be on Tuesday, Oct. 19 at the Gray Brown Funeral Home in Anniston, Ala.
Brother Webster died Sunday, Oct. 17 at about 4:00 pm.
Milton was the elder who had oversight of Polishing the Pulpit, the annual Smokey Mountain Marriage Retreat and House to House/Heart to Heart. He raised two gospel preachers who continue to have an impact on the Lord’s kingdom: Allen Webster, Editor of House to House/Heart to Heart, Director for Polishing the Pulpit and the pulpit preacher for the Jacksonville church of Christ, Wade Webster preaches for the Southhaven congregation in Mississippi, and Milton’s daughter Missy is married to Tracy Moore who preaches for a congregation in Tennessee.
The congregation asks that you please keep his wife Diana in your prayers, along with the entire Webster family.
Robert Whiten, an elder at the Jacksonville congregation, said of Webster, “He was a fine man who stood for the truth. We are going to miss him.”
Local historian dies at 92

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (BNc) — Charles Byron “C.B.” Arnette, Jr., a resident of Murfreesboro, Tenn., died Thursday, Oct. 14, at his home.
Arnette was a local historian and, along with his wife Louise, owned and operated Arnette Antique Galleries, an antiques auctioning business, for more than 32 years. He was also a prolific writer, having written five books, including an autobiography.
Funeral services were conducted today at the East Main Street church with brothers Julian Goodpaster and Wayne Lankford officiating, and grandson Bryon Sommardahl leading congregational singing. Burial will be at the Evergreen Cemetery. Read more
J.A. Thornton dies at 90

BOONEVILLE, Miss. (BNc) – Long-time gospel preacher and writer, Jean Armor Thornton, 90, died Monday, Oct. 11, 2010, at Scott-Del Personal Care Home in Booneville.
Thornton was a member of the Booneville church. He served on the President’s Advisory Board at Freed-Hardeman University for over 40 years and he was a past chairman of that board.
Thornton is survived by two daughters, Jeanita (Jim) Estes of Booneville and Joyce (Ralph) Gilmore of Jackson, Tenn.; one sister, Julia (Bobby) Milstead of Florence, Ala.; one brother, John L. (Peggy) Thornton of Hendersonville, Tenn.; nine grandchildren, Jennifer (Jon) Nieuwboer, Jill Lewis, Rachel (Evan) Aldridge, Rose Gilmore, Tim (Tammie) Estes, Steve (Nicole) Estes, Jay (April) Estes, Jon Estes and LeAnn (Jeremy) Jones; 10 great-grandchildren; his second wife’s children, Ann Langford of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Barry Pardue of Booneville. He is preceded in death by his first wife of 58 years, Delphia H. Thornton; his second wife, Jewell Thornton; an infant daughter and an infant son; and one sister and four brothers.
Memorial gifts should be sent to the J.A. Thornton Scholarship Fund at Freed-Hardeman University, 158 E. Main St., Henderson, TN 38340.
Five baptized at county jail

GENEVA, Alabama (BNc) — “Sometimes you have to hit rock bottom before you can come back up,” is a statement made about people on the wrong pathway in life. That statement often explains the position of those confined in the local county jail.
On Thursday evenings a group of men from the church in Geneva goes into the jail for Bible study with the inmates. As a result of those Bible studies, five men were baptized Thursday morning, October 7. Read more
New Cookie Ministry is hit

GENEVA, Alabama (BNc) — This author began a cookie ministry last week. Let me explain.
“Old-Timey Tea Cakes” was the recipe that caught my attention and I made a batch.
With four cups of flour, one and three-fourths cups of sugar, two sticks of butter and a few more ingredients, in a little over an hour I had 96 tea cakes that didn’t need to stay in our house. I decided out the door they would go as we visited different people on our Tuesday day of visiting.
My friend suggested a dozen would be a nice number of cookies to give each family.
The packaging was simple. I recycled my small gift bags with the colorful tissue paper. The cookies were placed in a new zip-lock bag and dropped gently into the bags. They were well received. Read more

ETSPM launches quarterly biblical magazine, ‘The Journal’

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (BNc) – In recent years East Tennessee School of Preaching and Missions (ETSPM) published a small booklet-sized magazine called Journey. Though we’ve received positive comments about it, the most common remark we’ve heard has been, “What happened to Journey?” Alas, it was never published regularly.
That problem has been corrected and a “new and improved” quarterly, “The Journal of ETSPM,” now takes its place. The Fall 2010 (Sept.) issue is heading to both our USPS and email lists.
