NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BNc) — James Russell Shirley, 83, of Hixson, Tenn., passed away on Thursday, Aug. 12, 2010, in Nashville, Tenn. He was born in Seco, Ky., and had lived most of his life in the Chattanooga area, moving to Nashville three years ago.

He was a Veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of Radnor Church of Christ in Nashville and was a former member of the North Hamilton congregation.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Beatrice Wiseman Shirley; son, Larry Eugene Shirley; parents, John R. and Ruby Shirley; siblings, Mary Vaughn, Lucille Barnett, Oscar Shirley, Edgar Shirley, Johnnie Hall, Roy Shirley and Willie Shirley.

Survivors are a daughter, Gay (Larry) Johnson, of Brentwood, Tenn.; son, Ray (Teresa) Shirley, of East Ridge; four grandchildren, Stacey Smith, Martha Johnson, Wesley Johnson and Veronica Grimes; and several great-grandchildren. Services were held Aug. 14, 2010 at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with Minister Jim Yates officiating. Burial was in Chattanooga Memorial Park.
