Missionary Randy Short heads up effort in northeastern Brazil for the country’s second orphanage.
RECIFE, Brazil (BNc)- When the Boa Vista church floated the idea of selling the Christian camp, missionary Randy Short of the Boa Viagem church, had a better idea.
The camp, Manna from the Lord, had gotten expensive to run. Randy proposed turning it into an orphanage and set into motion a 20-year-old dream of Christians in the area.
The Boa Vista elders agreed to donate the property for this new purpose.

Next began the process of funding. Through contacts in the U.S., the Hartselle, Ala., church showed interest in expanding its efforts to include involvement in the orphanage.
When representatives from the Hartselle church visited Recife, Randy also invited Maciel Vieira, former director of the Christian Home in the state of São Paulo, to be present.
Based on what the representatives saw in Recife, the Hartselle church decided to oversee the orphanage, and Maciel was hired as the director.

“The committees that had been meeting in Recife organized into a directorship and papers have been drawn up for the non-profit organization called the Manna Home (L.A.R. Maná),” Randy stated.
“In July of this year Maciel moved to Recife with his family, and work is continuing on a security wall. Renovations will prepare the property for use as a children’s home. The home will be operated like the one in Cabreuva, which includes separate units with house-parents. The large dormitory building will be converted into four to six separate apartments capable of housing families, with up to 12 children being cared for,” Randy said.

The new children’s home should be operational by the first quarter of 2009, Randy added.
