C. Dale Gillaspie, 88, of Dover, Oh., and formerly of Cadiz, died Aug. 3, in the Hennis Care Centre at Dover following an extended illness.
Dale retired in 1975 from Cadiz High School where he served as band director and music teacher for 27 years.
Born Jan. 24, 1920, in Wellsville, Oh., he was the son of the late Charles C. and Grace (Edwards) Gillaspie.
He was a longtime member of the church in Dover where he served as an elder. He was also a former deacon and elder for the Cadiz congregation.
While attending Mount Union College, he enjoyed playing cello in the Canton Symphony Orchestra. He also was a member of the Amateur Radio Club and was a craftsman who built three homes. He enjoyed other hobbies including photography and loved traveling 49 of the 50 states.
In addition to his parents, Dale was preceded in death by his brother Wilbur. He is survived by his wife Emmabelle (Mack) Gillaspie, with whom he would have celebrated 68 years of marriage Oct. 12; two sons, Larry (wife Barbara) Gillaspie of Dover and James (wife Elizabeth) Gillaspie of Louisville, Ky.; a daughter, Lyndra (husband James) Cunningham of Sierra Madre, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Brenda, Susan, Brent, Alan, Kathy, Tina and Kristy; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Aug. 6 in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory at Dover with Tom Butterfield officiating. Graveside services were Wednesday in the Holly Memorial Gardens in Colerain.
